Choosing the right electronic dog fence alternative
You don't have to build a $5-8,000 traditional (wood, chain-link, vinyl) fence anymore to keep your dog safe in your own yard, out of trouble in the neighbors' lawn, and out of the path of oncoming traffic. No there is a modern solution, that is actually more effective - electronic pet containment.
Having been a dog owner and part-time breeder all my life, I have had my share of frustration and heart ache from beloved pets' bad behavior and tragic accidents and decided to do something about it. I tried building an expensive (and ugly) fence but my dogs always found ways out of the yard whether digging under or being opportunistic about when they make their escapes. So being a gadget guy, I began looking into electronic solutions. Some were cheap and didn't work, but others were exactly what the doctor ordered and have been keeping my dogs out of trouble for years.
Here is what I have learned about Electronic Pet Containment:
1. There are a lot of names for the same thing:
Underground Dog Fence
Invisible Dog Fence
Electronic Dog Fence
Wireless Dog Fence (actually different since it doesn't use a buried wire)
Electronic Pet Containment
2. There are a lot of brands out there but they're definitely not the same, here are my recommendations:
Professional Installation and Training: Invisible Fence Brand
Quality Do-It-Yourself Retail: Pet Safe Brand

You have a dog, and you want to keep it in your yard and out of the neighbor's flowers. You consider putting up a traditional fence, but it costs more than you had imagined or want to spend, and moreover, you’re not excited about a six-foot wall enclosing your scenic yard just to keep your dog from wandering.
Attaching your pet to a post, a tree or even a walker line just seems cruel, not to mention the ugly tangled wires that are strewn about and the worn out grass where the dog paces back and forth in your lawn.
Do you have other options? Yes, you do! It’s nice living in the electronic era, where the underground electric dog fence can be installed, and is invisible to everyone except your pet. An underground dog fence is also known as an invisible barrier. The system is based on a special collar that receives radio signals from a wire buried in the ground or or a base line of a traditional fence or a building. The ends of the wire are fixed at a transmitter which is usually placed inside your garage or basement.
The heart of the underground dog fence is that once the collar receives a radio signal that the dog is nearing the edge of the property or designated "safe" area, an audible warning signal goes off. Then if the dog proceeds past the underground dog fence perimeter the two metal studs which rest against the skin of dog administer a static shock correction.
Because as the dog approaches the underground wire of perimeter, the collar feels the signal by weak radio. Initially, the collar gives an audible warning signal, and if the dog remains close to the perimeter, an inoffensive static shock is delivered to discourage continued movement in that direction.
The problem with these types of systems arise when pet owners consider them as install-and-forget gadgets. Most manufacturers recommend one to two weeks of structured training of 10 minutes per day to familiarize your dog with the system. The considerations of training include to equip the collar on the dog during several days with the stopped system before beginning the training with perimeter to secure that the dog associates the shock the perimeter, not the collar itself. Moreover, the perimeter training should include the owner quickly showing the dog where the safe zones are when they meet initially the aural signal and the shock.

By far the best experience I have had with containing and protecting my dogs has been to become an Invisible Fence Brand customer. Not only did they take care of all the hard labor of the installation ( I did not enjoy the hours of work I spent installing the first few retail do-it-yourself products I tried out), but they also trained my wild beasts to understand the system way more effectively and quickly than I could have myself.

This system is very similar to the invisible dog fence systems of barrier. The principal difference between them is that this system is without wire, where the invisible dog fence systems of barrier are based on a wire which circulates the perimeter of the sector where you want that your dog is contained. The wire can be buried in the ground, race along the existing barriers or the bases of building. The wire of perimeter produced of a signal by radio which activates the collar while the dog approaches.
The Wireless Dog Fence is a great thing to have in your house for many reasons. Your pet is welcome in the majority of the parts of the house, but usually there’s parts of you the house that you would like to keep animal-free without raising your voice or installing the ugly gates. You can also effectively keep your pet off the couch, out of the dining room, and far from your food pre and garabage spots in the kitchen. And my all-time favorite - you can keep your dog from the disgusting habit of poking around the cat's litter box.
To work anywhere where you need them, quietly, in fact, and hidden sight. These small portable transmitters broadcast a radio signal to the same collar the dog uses for the outdoor undergound fence (at least with my Invisible Fence Brand system). The systems function with collars of receiver of the program, thus it is a great manner of increasing the value of your hidden purchase of barrier.

The other difference is that the Wireless Dog Fence system is not an Invisible Fence Company product - I know what you are thinking - "Wait, didn't he just tell us that he recommends Invisible Fence?" Yes, I do recommend Invisible Fence, but I also found a need for a portable wireless dog fence - and found the perfect one to do the job.
