Dog Doors are great for the dog and the pet parent!
While they're generally not an issue if you live in an apartment, or have only one puppy, a dog door can be an important question for anyone who lives with a larger or multiple dogs. If you do not want to awake in the middle of the night to let your dog in or out.
Even if your dog spends most its time outside it works well to have a dog door to provide a warm and dry room during more cold or more rainy days. The first thing which you must consider before you begin shopping for dog doors is the size of your dog. While this can seem obvious, if you have a pup you must certainly take into account ohow much larger the dog will develop in the coming years. Other things which should consider to you are also placement of the door, and if the door will lead to the yard, garage or enclosed porch.
Another thing to keep in mind is that while dog doors are very useful for the dog to get in and out, cheaper ones can also make your home vulnerable to raccoons or other small animals in your house. If you live in a heavily wooded area where vermin are more prevelant and want to prevent this youshould look at some of the types of locking dog doors. Besides keeping unwanted animals out, you will want to obtain one of the dog doors which can be locked at night and while you are away to prevent unwanted guests of the human variety - I am guessing there has been more than one home illegal entered via a large dog door.
Another handy option is to set the dog door to allow entry from only one direction or the other, so your dog can only use the dog door to come inside or outside. This allows you to be more aware of where your pet is and what he is up to.
The last thing that should consider about getting a dog door is to get a pet door of quality seals and insluation. It is particularly important during winter to prevent your home from cooling considerably. Its also not much fun paying for air-conditioning in the summer if it is all blowing out of a cheap dog door.
